You're a Trilobite...

What a day today has been. So many things going on within the realm of Michaeldom these days. To start off my day, I woke up early and headed out to Caesars Creek. It was 50 degrees outside, the weather has been miserable of late, and today was nothing short of indifferent. Today’s journey into the field was to be solely a paleontological one. So, in my case it was good that it had been raining for the past two weeks. First, and foremost, trilobite fossils stick out like a sore thumb when they are wet. And Secondly, because of the rain, fossils would be washed out from the outcrop basins, making it that much easier to find them.
There, at the visitors center, I was to meet my fellow geology classmates for an extended field trip. The only one to show up was my child genius instructor (began college when he was 15, finished undergrad in 3yrs, has 11 minors, and is working on his 2nd PhD… I know, we’re all thinking “Jeeesus Christ.” For gOD’s sake he’s only a year older than I am) Tony. That said, we really didn’t miss those lazy bastards who stayed home in bed nursing their hangovers… Tony and I spent about 3 hours breaking the rules of the park down at the creek bed looking for Isotelus Maximus, only to find a shit load of shell fragments and a trace fossil (we found an intact one but it was incased in a thick bedding of shale too impossible to even think of trying to remove). I finally found a whole trilobite later in the afternoon, and I was happy. There were plenty of other common fossils found by yours truly and some rather uncommon ones for that area as well. It was fun practice for what will be my next thread of today’s in depth look at the brightest star in my universe, me.
I have been applying madly as of late to try and get a job at the museum downtown (or anywhere), but have been coming up with no results. I want a job in a museum to gain experience for after I graduate and move on out west, for an equally similar job (hopefully better). When this route fell through, I decided it was time to try a stab at interning (now that I have enough time… cause I wont be graduating till December now). I started writing my proposal letters of introduction late this last week, applying to three different ones. The first one sounds kind of tedious, but is a respectable job resume filler, is in the education relations department. If I get this internship, I will be setting up curriculum for the schools around the Cincinnati area to interact with the museum (nifty, eh?). The second, which maybe a paid internship is through the history department as a research assistant and I will be helping research 300 years of Cincinnati (woo!). Lastly, there is another internship within the paleontology department, which intrigues me the most, which is all about helping the director sort, classify, enter data, blah blah blah, and mostly learning curator responsibilities. The only reservation I have about this one is that I may not be able to receive academic credit for this, as the anthropology department of UC doesn’t allow non-majors to receive any… I would have to go through the biology department (if they’ll let me). Exciting news is that I sent those letters out (via email) Thursday and heard back from everyone (‘cept the damn history guy) Friday morning by 8am… conversed yet again… and now I have two interviews… YAY!
Finally, as I drawl this exclusive to a close, I want to mention that I saw Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy tonight. And let me just say this… “IT WAS FUCKING HILARIOUS!” Go see it… go see it now… Do It… If Goob enjoyed watching this film in the theater, then it has to be worth the 7-8 bucks to go see it. I hope I don’t give too much away here, but in the movie, the Earth blows up… *gasp* Well, I am out of here for now, just remember to always bring your towel with you wherever you go. You never know when you are going to need it. Peace —sib—
